Saturday July 23rd
DEMONSTRATE AGAINST NUCLEAR TRAINS THROUGH THE OLYMPIC SITE

Action will consist of a journey along the route used by nuclear trains between Highbury & Islington and Stratford station, followed by a rally and symbolic die-in in front of Stratford Station.

Meet noon at Highbury and Islington Station

Leafletting at Highbury & Islington, Dalston Kingsland, Hackney Central and Hackney Wick by different groups getting off at intermediate stations and taking later trains, so we are all on same train between Hackney Wick and Stratford. (Train timetables will be available.)

Arrive 1.30pm at Stratford Station. March out together.
(People who don’t want to do the train part of the action should go straight to Stratford for 1.30pm to meet the train contingent.)

1.45pm-2.25pm: rally outside Stratford Station, with speakers and music. (Shahrar Ali, Green Party candidate for the London Assembly has agreed to speak. Speakers invited include ones from Games Monitor and East End Action. Rhythms of Resistance have been invited to play.)

2.30pm-2.45pm: silent die-in outside the station.

We will also run a stall outside the station with leafletting and collecting names on a petition between 1.30pm and 3pm.
Organised by: Nuclear Trains Action group, 020-7607 2302.

WHAT ARE NUCLEAR TRAINS AND WHY ARE THEY DANGEROUS?

“Nuclear trains” carry highly-radioactive spent nuclear fuel rods from nuclear power stations up to Sellafield in Cumbria for “reprocessing” (in which the uranium and plutonium they contain are separated out.) A serious accident or terrorist action which broke open a flask would result in the release of highly-radioactive material which, it has been estimated by experts, would kill thousands of people downwind in a built-up area such as East London and require mass evacuation of a large area for a considerable period.

What better a place and time from a terrorist point of view to carry out such an action than in the vicinity of the Olympics before or during the Games? Such an action during the Games, if successful, would make the continuation of the Games impossible. If carried out successfully before the Games, it would prevent them being held at the Games Site at all.

Nuclear trains go between Maryland and Stratford Stations and on through the middle of the Olympic Site.
