The grandest totalitarian spectacle of sport since the Nazi version in Berlin in 1936 is over. Like that one this version prominently featured the 'sacred' flame and the collusion of the IOC and the media.

Henry Kissinger and members of the Bush Crime Family came to pay their respects. The spectators however did not attend in the expected numbers.

The lavish and steely Chinese charm offensive did not compare well with previous Olympic spectacles. Did they pull off a PR coup or blow it?

They spent lavishly to ensure that they came top of the medals table. But that will not satisfy the hunger for world respect suffered by millions of Chinese football fans.

Adidas and other sportswear manufacturers however felt they were well served by their exposure to a market of hundreds of millions of potential consumers. America's National Broadcasting Company were happy with their investment in the Games
